  • The Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i has employment opportunities all across the state.
  • The Nature Conservancy is a great site for anyone interested in conservation.
  • The Earthjustice Hawaii Regional Office is great for those interested in environmental policy.
  • Hawaiian Ecosystems at Risk Project (HEAR) is dedicated to the study of invasive species.
  • The Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science (PIPES) is a set of university level programs hosted within PACRC at UHH.  Find a variety of internships related to the natural resources of Hawai'i’i and the Pacific region.
  • The Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps is a summer program for students interested in protecting Hawaiian heritage while learning about conservation, Hawaii’s native and endangered plants and animals, Hawaii’s cultural relationship with the land, and more through a strictly field experience; hiking and camping in breathtaking habitats is a daily occurrence.  HYCC runs from June 11 through July 20 – stipend and credit available.
  • Malama Hawaii is a hui of over seventy organizations and hundreds of individuals committed to protecting Hawaii’s land and sea. Partnering with The Nature Conservancy and several other agencies, they provide volunteer and job opportunities.  Click on ‘volunteer’ and ‘get involved’ links for details.
  • The Hawaiian Conservation Alliance (HCA) is a cooperative partnership of 16 government, education, and non-profit organizations, offering career, internship, volunteer, and scholarship opportunities here in Hawaii. 
  • Saltwater, Inc. has employment for observers in Hawaii and Alaska. Observers gather information aboard commercial longline vessels about catch, by-catch, location, gear, fishing operations, and the interaction of protected species, particularly sea turtles, sea birds, and marine mammals.  Observers will be based primarily in Honolulu to collect data on turtles, birds, marine mammals as well as information on target and bycatch species. In the tuna fisheries, trips last about 21 days and swordfish trips are about 30 days. Boats range in size from 49' to 100' and conditions on the vessels can be spartan.
  • In conjunction with Sustainable Saunders, The CDSE (Career Development and Student Employment) has launched a site for sustainability related information including organizations, links, internships, employers and events. Thanks to the Sustainability Council, Public Policy Center and many professors who have integrated sustainability into their curriculum, the site provides a list of sustainability related courses for Spring 2009.   • The Marine Science Department of Stanford is great search engine for careers and jobs in marine biology and oceanography.
  • Check out Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program.
  • For worldwide opportunities, check out Jobs Abroad.
  • Another great search engine is the Marine Education Society of Australasia Inc. website for lots of info/job links.
  • The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University maintains a list of current internship opportunities available in the environmental, geological, and marine sciences. 
  • The Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Program has current listings of marine science fellowships, internships, and employment opportunities.
  • The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences provides internships that commonly focus around benthic ecology research.
  • Check out the College of William and Mary – Virginia Institute of Marine Science for summer internships in various areas of marine science, including biological, geological, chemical, physical, environmental science, fisheries and management.
  • Not a complete ‘marine science’ experience, but the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) through the Department of Energy, Office of Biological and Environmental Research, Global Change Education Program provides summer global change opportunities.
  • The Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute has summer internships in the engineering, aquaculture, marine science, marine operations, biomedical marine research, environmental laboratory, marine education and dolphin research divisions.
  • The Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory (Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa)has dolphin research internships held in the spring, summer, and fall, geared for students interested in studying dolphin intelligence and cognition in a behavioral laboratory setting.
  • The Louisiana Marine Consortium has internship programs that allow students to acquire research experience and university credit by working under a faculty member. The general area of faculty expertise include benthic ecology, coastal geomorphology, chemical ecology, ecology of phytoplankton, ecology of zooplankton, and fishery biology. 
  • Marine Bioproducts Engineering Center in Honolulu runs a summer undergraduate research fellowship program and represents a collaboration among the University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of California, Berkeley, and several industry partners which are charting a course in the emerging field of bioproducts derived from marine and aquatic organisms.
  • The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has three-month internships allow students to be involved in advanced software, mechanical, and electrical/electronic engineering projects. Students may work with experts in deep-sea ecology, ocean-floor mapping, ocean observation systems, microbiology, physical oceanography, in situ chemical analyses, tectonics, or geology. 
  • Check out Mystic Aquarium for internships that integrate work experience and an independent research project.
  • The National Aquarium in Baltimore has internships working with professors within one of fourteen Aquarium careers like Aquarist (fish), Aviculture (birds), Capital Projects (architecture), Conservation, Development/Membership (fund raising/family programming), Herpetology (reptiles/amphibians), Horticulture (plants), Information Services, Laboratory Services, Library Services, Marine Mammal Training, Marine Education, Marketing/Group Sales, and Public Relations.
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Student Research Participation (scroll down to NOAA) has 10-week summer research and development relating to science, math, and engineering. For 10 weeks in the summer, students will be placed at NOAA headquarters and/or field centers.
  • National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
    is an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to join research projects each summer in the earth sciences, ocean sciences, as well as other fields.  The projects vary from year to year, and are located everywhere from Alaska to Atlanta!
  • Don’t forget the Pacific Whale Foundation for Hawaii and Alaska. Research internships are available in Hawaii and Alaska as two-week programs, where students work side-by-side with marine researchers, working with dolphins and/or whales 
  • The Scripps Institution of Oceanography has a range of summer research opportunities are available through the UCSD Scripps Institution
  • Shannon Point Marine Center has summer internships on productivity and nutrient cycling in local watershed systems; marine microbial ecology; marine chemical ecology; physiology of symbiosis; larval development, physiology, ecology; morphology of marine invertebrates; and environmental toxicology
  • The University of Delaware Graduate College of Marine Studies has summer intern programs - click on the ‘Research & Education’ link, then on ‘Undergraduate Programs’
  • The University of Miami - Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science offers internships in the departments of Chemical Oceanography, Marine Biology and Fisheries, Applied Marine Physics, Physical Oceanography and Meteorology, and Marine Geology and Geophysics.  Click on the link to ‘Summer Undergraduate Internships’ 
  • Walt Disney World Animal Programs Advanced Internship Opportunities provides six-month internship programs exist in the following fields: animal behavior, wildlife tracking, veterinary hospital, veterinary medical records, dietary/nutritional, conservation education, aquatic/environmental chemistry, information management, library science, animal presenter, aquarium, marine mammal, aquaculture
  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has mostly graduate and post-graduate programs, BUT they do have summer student fellowship programs for undergraduates to work in one of WHOI’s five departments (Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering; Biology; Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry; Geology and Geophysics; Physical Oceanography; Marine Policy Center).   • Maryland Sea Grant's Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Estuarine Science is a 12-week program from May 17 to August 9, 2009. They select undergraduates in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science, and are particularly interested in supporting talented students from institutions where access to marine science and to research projects is limited and who are from underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) (UH STUDENTS HAVE AN EXCELLENT CHANCE!!!) Students receive $4200 stipend plus housing and travel to and from site. Applications due: February 12, 2009
  • Summer Fisheries Jobs Available through the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Center for Aquatic Technology Transfer. There is availability for an Ozark Crew, Stream Inventory Crew, and a Fish Passage Crew. Project runs from May 26-August 21, 2009. DEADLINE: March 1, 2009. Visit this HANDOUT for details.
  • Each summer, Mote Marine Laboratory hosts a 10-week program focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 10 advanced undergraduate students. Students are paired with Mote scientists and develop and complete an independent research project related to their mentor's research interests. Students gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide research symposium. Students attend research seminars and workshops on career skills in science,  Students also have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences.   • The Marine Mammal Research Group of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, is currently looking for two volunteers during the summer season 2010. The boat-based surveys will be carried out in the Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park, 200 km north of Sydney, from 15th February to 15th March 2010. Interns will participate in the field on a daily basis collecting behavioural and ecological data of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). The internship offers an excellent opportunity for qualified and motivated individuals to obtain field training and analysis with experienced dolphin researchers.
